21 Years in the Making:

The Art of Transformational Learning

Category: Who We Are

By: Benjamin Scholl

Twenty-one years ago, I was newly married, living in Bonham, Texas, literally on a street named “Victory Street.” I was also starting my first real job: teaching at Bonham High School. I was so determined to get the atmosphere and energy just right the summer before that first year of teaching. I painted my classroom dark blue. I hung letters spelling “Service to God, Country & Home” above the whiteboard, thinking this would inspire my small-town Texas U.S. Government students to want to learn and understand political science. The pay was quite low, but otherwise, it was a great first job. Today, as I set up a meeting room to deliver guest service training at a resort, there are so many throughlines to that freshly painted blue classroom in Bonham, Texas, twenty-one years ago.

Just as I painted the wall, curated the student experience, and put so much heart into that first teaching job, I spend countless hours planning each and every training delivery. What posters are we going to put on the walls? How will each and every slide look? (I’m thankful for the creators on the Create My PowerPoint team who are used to my detailed requests on those decks). Let’s make a workbook that is a work of art. All of this has a complete throughline to that first job in Bonham. I also believe that this attention to detail, this high level of care, and the endless drive to bring the energy and create an experience is what makes me uniquely me—and makes a B to C Solutions learning experience with a client unlike any other. What is the secret sauce? I believe there are three things that set our deliveries apart: 1 – Triple sensory delivery. 2 – The art & science of performance. 3 – Uncommon dedication to creating psychological safety for learners. Let’s explore how we’re bringing each of those to life 21 years after that first day of school.

Alright, I made up the phrase “Triple sensory delivery,” AND I believe that is exactly what I am meant to create. First, there is the visual delight we must create in a B to C Solutions classroom. This is where the endless drive to get the posters and slides just right comes from—to make them works of art rather than transactional deliverables. Sending edits back to creators that say “elevate this slide” and “make certain this visual will evoke the energy we want” is all about creating that visual moment. It’s a space where you not only read what you are learning, but see it in a way that lights up your creative right brain through visual beauty. I don’t stop at the visual sense. In every learning experience, I always curate the music to stimulate the right energy. We have reflective music for reflective moments. We have hype music to raise the energy, and everything in between. A learning experience stimulates the heart and calls you to action through emotion. I believe there is no better way to activate the heart than through music. So, we’ve got the visual sense going and the auditory sense going. Now, there is the scent. When was the last time you walked into a training setting and there was a intentional scent? Well, that’s just what we aim to create. I have been known to take my train diffuser (Thank you, Margaret, for the gift!) and bring the right scent to the training environment to evoke the right energy. Visual, auditory, and olfactory elements make up the triple sensory delivery at B to C Solutions.

The next uniquely B to C Solutions learning delivery is that we don’t just tell you information; we employ the art & science of performance in doing so. Each delivery has elements of storytelling, where we bring concepts to life by telling stories. When we are at our best, they are stories that evoke a strong emotional reaction. After all, it is through the heart that learners are driven to change and embrace the learning. That’s the science part—knowing that storytelling is the key that unlocks human hearts and leads them to want to change and take action. The art part is getting to know the attendees just enough during their arrival that you can sprinkle in personal calls to action and stories that will specifically speak to who is sitting in the room. This is the art & science of performance that is uniquely B to C Solutions’ approach to facilitating training.

The final “secret sauce” is an uncommon dedication to creating psychological safety. This shows up in so many things we do in the classroom. From having pipe cleaners so those who have attention disorders (like me) can fidget and create while learning, to telling stories that are vulnerable and make the learners see that this facilitator isn’t perfect. Being imperfect is part of the beauty of being human. Finally, we do reflections and journaling so that learners can process what they are learning AND not feel that they need to do it in the higher-risk setting of verbal processing. We believe an uncommon dedication to psychological safety is a powerful unlock to learning.

What started 21 years ago in that blue classroom on the second floor of Bonham High School has become a recipe for transformational moments of learning at B to C Solutions today. As I write this, we are making our first course catalogue. With well over 100 individual pieces of curriculum, we are well on our way. B to C Solutions is far more than a training company; however, to deliver on our promise of “Elevate your mindset. Accelerate your results,” we must connect to and inspire more than our fair share of hearts and minds in classrooms at resorts and at clients of all types.
